BOTOX® Cosmetic

You live a hectic lifestyle. The stresses of balancing a life filled by work, children, a spouse, your home and even the pet all seem to weigh you down. While all these aspects of your life also fill you with joy, there are traces of the hundreds of frowns, smiles and laughs left behind on your face as a daily reminder. A revolutionary product, BOTOX®  has repeatedly proven to erase the unsightly signs of aging.

What is Botox®?

BOTOX® is the trade name of botulinum toxin type A, a purified toxin produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum. Originally approved in the 1980’s by the FDA  as treatment for a “lazy” eye and uncontrollable eye blinking, it quickly grew to popularity and has been used for cosmetic purposes since 1989.

How does the treatment work?

BOTOX® works by weakening the muscles of facial expression which are located beneath the immediate surface of the facial skin. Once the resting tone of these muscles is weakened, the muscles relax and the skin flattens out. This treatment option is an entirely different approach to treating the aging face. While filler injections work by filling in a wrinkle, BOTOX® injections will physiologically weaken the muscles, removing the wrinkles naturally.

Numerous staff members at the Soderstrom Skin Institute, Skin Dimensions Day Spa and Boutique are qualified to administer BOTOX®. The procedure lasts approximately 10 minutes with literally no down time following the procedure.  Some patients have reported mild bruising that can be easily covered with make-up, but most have virtually no signs of injection.

Common problem areas are smile lines around the mouth, tissue between the eyebrows or the brow’s “furrow”, and the area around the eyes where crow’s feet form.

All cosmetic procedures carry the possibility of risk and uncertainty.  Side effects and possible risks of BOTOX® include, unmet expectations, frequent injections, low level of response, lid-lag, paralyzed muscles, weakened muscles, infection, and in rare cases, a systemic reaction, including aches, pains, and headaches.  It is important to discuss your medical history during your consultation.  A thorough discussion with your physician of risks and benefits as well as your expectations will be completed prior to your procedure.
